Estimation
What better way to build number sense than by estimating! Most of the Mathematics we do in our daily lives has to do with estimations. Whether we are at the grocery store, gas station, restaurant, or job site we are constantly estimating. Estimations allow us to have a sense of what the actual outcome will be.
Current Events
Making Math relevant to students is extremely important and connecting it to current events does just that. This section allows students to use their math skills and apply it to current issues.
Everyday math
Math is all around us and students need to realize it. Never again should a student ask, "When will I use this?" We need to educate students by using relevant, ordinary items to make it more meaningful. The everyday starters will help students realize that Math can be found everywhere.
Number fluency
Just like in Reading fluency, we need fluency in Mathematics. Recognizing relationships between numbers and the ability to reorganize numbers to find a solution is essential in building number sense. The starters in this section are intended to be timed to encourage students to find relationships between numbers but finishing all of them should not be the main focus. Having students share their thinking process in this section is very powerful.
